F-4E "PHANTOM II"

SPECS

The first in our Elite Warbird Collection, Modern Series, is the “Phabulous Phantom,” a truly iconic fighter of the Viet Nam period. This big and powerful fighter wore more hats than any other in US military service. It was the only combat aircraft to serve with the Air Force, Navy and Marines at the same time, and perform virtually all aerial duties. This included roles as air superiority fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, and Wild Weasel missions. With success on all fronts, the US Air Force operated F-4E Phantom's even as late as the first Gulf War in 1991 and it also served and is still serving with many foreign air forces…an unbelievable service career of six decades!

American fighter designs in the sixties emphasized air to air capability to be best handled at longer distances with missiles, and therefore ceased installing machine guns and cannons on its combat aircraft. With heavy losses mounting to the North Vietnamese Migs, this lack of weaponry proved to be a fatal mistake. A study of tactics employed by the Mig pilots showed that if they stayed in tight with US aircraft armed only with missiles, these missiles would therefore become useless at closer ranges, giving them a great advantage. The idea of the aerial dog fight was not yet dead as the US chose to believe!

Enter “The Gunfighter.” The F-4E was the Air Force’s answer to the problem. By incorporating a General Electric M-61 20 millimeter Vulcan cannon in the nose of the aircraft, this ensured "The Gunfighters" survivability and combat effectiveness. The Phantoms continued to carry their missiles, but were now equipped with a big gun that would quickly dominate the skies. This F-4E variant is the subject of our exciting 1/10th scale replica of this superlative aircraft. Gloriously finished in amazing polished white bronze, this big bird oozes the essence of the massive power and capability of the original.

The pedestal base is a phenomenal work of art, paying homage to the fantastic “Gunfighter”, adorned by a section of 20 millimeter belt and ammo. For the development of this incredible
art piece, we used a real section of Vulcan canon belt and ammo in the creation of our mold, thus exactly replicating the details of the Phantom’s mighty firepower.
